Choice Privileges Redemptions
The sexiest option for Choice Privileges redemptions is less appealling by the day. Perhaps that adjective shouldn’t apply to such a mundane (to the masses) hotel loyalty program, anyway. Regardless, redeeming Choice points for stays at select Preferred Hotels properties has gotten more expensive. I’m unphased. Choice Privileges is still my second-favorite hotel currency out there. This is due to handy earning options, perhaps my favorite barrier to entry, and a variety of solid redemption options. We’re focusing on that last one today. These are just a few ways to steadily redeem Choice points for solid value.
Road Trips
People who do stuff online for money focus plenty on aspirational stays at desirable destinations. But I also enjoy those less-remarkable-but-just-as-valuable redemptions along the way. Choice properties, primarily Comfort and Country Inn locations, consistently deliver a predictable product for my family and me when we travel by car. Points rates aren’t ever a ripoff, either, which leads me to my next point.
Why spend more points (Choice or otherwise) than necessary on road trips? Often, I could blow more Hilton, Marriott, or IHG points, but Choice comes in consistently cheaper. The product may be more basic, but I don’t need more than that for a short, quick stay. I want a clean, comfy place to lay my head for a few hours, maybe grabbing a quick bite and coffee on the way out. Economical redemptions at Comfort and Country Inn properties fit perfectly.
Sweet Spot Rewards
Choice Privileges routinely offers a selection of properties for loyalists to redeem at discounted rates – just over a couple dozen currently available through 30 November. The periodically-rotating list covers a variety of brands across their portfolio. Reward rates start at 10k points nightly and are generally a 20-25% savings over normal ones. And while that’s a relatively small portion of Choice properties, routine promo updates allow additional travelers to take part.
Behold, Ascend
For a bit more character, I like to focus on Ascend Collection properties. These are often one-off, boutique locations which sometimes provide larger rooms and a more substantial breakfast included in the award rate. They’re often located in unique areas – at times, the only full service properties around.
And don’t forget Radisson properties in the Americas! I’ve redeemed there plenty, but oddly not since the merger. Radisson, Blu, and Red brands offer some distinctive properties, including this random Scranton, PA location on my list.
Go For The Suite!
One of my favorite angles with Choice redemptions is that the base points rate is sometimes redeemable for a larger room or suite. Why settle for a standard room when you can go big for the same amount of points? I’ve noticed options here have decreased over time, but I’m happy to say they still exist. I have another such stay planned in the near future and will report back soon!
College Sports Experiences
Attending large sporting events isn’t exactly my cup of tea anymore, but Choice periodically offers attractive packages here. They’re popular, apparently, as options routinely sell out. Check back often, as they update and fill up quickly!
Preferred Hotels
Despite the recent devaluations, I have no plans to stop redeeming Choice points at participating Preferred Hotels. Many properties only went up a bit, some so little that the increased rates are still attractive. Bigger picture, rates going up may scare off some prospective interest, perhaps leading to a more lasting redemption option. I’m squinting here, but I can still see it.
Choice Privileges Redemptions – Conclusion
Obviously, Choice Privileges offers a few redemption options you’ll want to avoid. Transfers to airline programs are generally terrible, where one surrenders five Choice points for one mile. And, of course, stay away from gift cards redemptions.
Choice Privileges is definitely not a program for every traveler. Many won’t find enough desirable properties, others don’t have the patience to learn about a niche program, or both. But, again, those who put in a bit extra with Choice can still find reliable value. How are you currently redeeming for Choice Privileges awards?
