Chicken Burgers and Baked Fries ($10 Family Dinner Idea)

1 hour ago 3

We love hamburgers, but since my husband has been needing to eat lower fat/less red meat for health reasons, we’ve been exploring other options. Chicken burgers have been a yummy alternative! Another exciting plus of ground chicken is that I can regularly get it at Publix for approximately half of the price of ground beef (if you sign up here, they will email you a $1.50/1 printable coupon that can be printed twice per month).

"Healthy Chicken Burgers and Oven Fries" is written in bold text, as well as "MoneySavingMom.com" and "$10 Dinner Idea." Image is of Plate of golden brown chicken patties set out with burger buns and toppings.

The meat mixture is pretty soft and messy, so I normally cook the burgers on an electric skillet. If you have time to chill the meat mixture, though, these burgers can be cooked on the grill.

We top chicken burgers with all the same toppings we love on hamburgers, and I like to serve them with baked oven fries. It’s a simple, quick meal that everyone around here loves!

How to Make Chicken Burgers and Baked Fries:

1. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees.

2. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground chicken, eggs, ground oats or bread crumbs, mayonnaise, chopped onion, garlic, and spices. Mix together well. Put the bowl into the freezer while you prepare the potatoes.

Mixing bowl filled with ground chicken, eggs, flour, chopped onion, garlic, and spices before combining.

3. Wash the potatoes and cut into sticks/fries. Dry well with paper towels. Place the potatoes on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and any other spices you prefer. (I used salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika — yum!)

Raw potato wedges spread on a baking tray, coated with seasoning before roasting.

4. Bake at 450 degrees until crispy, stirring occasionally. (This takes 25-35 minutes, depending on how thick your fries are.)

5. Heat a few Tablespoons of olive oil in an electric skillet. Remove the bowl from the freezer and form into patties using oiled hands (if the mixture is too wet/sticky, you can just plop it onto the skillet and spread it into a patty on the skillet using the back of a spoon). Cook on one side until browned and then flip and cook the other side until brown. Use a meat thermometer to make sure the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees.

6. Wash and slice the lettuce and tomato and serve with cheese on top of the burgers, with the hot fries (and lots of ketchup, of course!) on the side.

FAQs about Chicken Burgers with Oven Fries:

What is the best burger for high cholesterol?

Chicken or turkey burgers are healthy alternatives to traditional burgers because — unlike red meat — they’re low in saturated fat, a contributor to high cholesterol.

What is a good binder for chicken burgers?

To bind chicken burgers, I recommend eggs, mayonnaise, and oats or Panko breadcrumbs.

What cheese is best for chicken burgers?

My favorite is provolone because it melts well and has a gentle flavor that doesn’t overpower the chicken. You could also use Swiss, cheddar, or even pepper jack.

What toppings do you put on a chicken burger?

I use the same toppings I would for a regular burger — lettuce, tomato, cheese, and ketchup. You could also add mustard, red onion, pickles, or aioli.
