We all need to clean our homes, which is why most of us have cleaning routines of some sort. Some of us do the housework ourselves, while an increasing number of people pay cleaning services to do it for them. There are lots of different options.

Many people opt for standard cleaning services when they need them. Then, when the house gets excessively grubby, they might book a deep clean to take care of hard-to-reach areas and longer-term dirt and dust build-up. They decide when they need a cleaner, managing the process to meet their changing needs. It’s a flexible approach that works well for relatively infrequent cleanings.

But if you’re a frequent traveler, a full-time employee, or simply a very busy person, outsourcing a cleaning schedule for your home is likely to be a priority.

Challenges Frequent Work Travelers Face

Syncing a Cleaning Schedule Around Frequent Work Travel

A primary issue is that frequent travel can make keeping your home consistently clean especially difficult. You may be away when the house would normally be cleaned, return home with little time to catch up, and then have another trip on the calendar before you have had time to organize another cleaning. Using a professional cleaning service will make keeping your home clean a whole lot easier. However, repeatedly arranging appointments around flights and travel plans can quickly become another task to manage.

For busy homeowners who travel regularly, the solution may be to rethink how cleaning is scheduled. Instead of arranging a cleaning whenever you need one, you can opt for a recurring service that keeps your home on a regular cleaning schedule whether you are home or away.

This approach can save time and reduce the amount of planning needed to keep your home clean, especially when your travel schedule changes frequently. The challenge will be to find a service that is convenient, reliable, trustworthy, and affordable.

Individual Cleanings vs. a Recurring Cleaning Service

What’s the difference, considering both types use automation?

The key distinction is that a cleaning business offering individual cleanings automates the customer journey and individual job fulfilment. Recurring cleaning services automate ongoing schedules and repeat delivery.

Individual Cleanings vs. a Recurring Cleaning Service

Individual Cleanings

Simply put, maintaining a cleaning routine means you are responsible for organizing ongoing household tasks. But it doesn’t necessarily mean you need to do the actual cleaning yourself. Instead, you can source reputable house cleaning services in your area and compare their policies, prices, and what a standard cleaning includes.

Many cleaning services work according to hourly pricing models, sometimes offering discounts that encourage long-term commitments. Others charge per cleaning, often based on the size and location of the home as well as the level of dirtiness.

Then you decide how often and when to use their services, managing bookings yourself. This is a flexible arrangement enabling you to miss weeks or even months of cleaning if you wish. Repeat orders are rebooked or retriggered manually on an ad hoc basis. This is why these platforms often structure their models to encourage repeat orders.

They do this by:

  • Encouraging customers to schedule their next appointment immediately after a cleaning
  • Sending thank you messages and encouraging feedback, maintaining contact with customers
  • Offering recurring weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly packages
  • Framing prices so that the above options are cheaper than one-time cleanings

Many cleaning services use automation software to simplify individual bookings. For instance, customers can book online, receive instant confirmations, make payments, and get appointment reminders.

Recurring Cleaning Services

Recurring cleaning services ensure regular cleanings to suit your needs. Those that are automated save even more time and effort involved with having to manage cleaning routines yourself. A frequent traveler will likely want to avoid a service that requires constant manual input.

Hiring an automated recurring cleaning service is the obvious solution for anyone who doesn’t want to go the DIY route or get bogged down by managing said cleanings. It’ll be up to you to decide how often the service kicks in and to define what routine tasks must be done, which will ultimately determine the cost.

Most recurring services allow customers to choose whether they want their homes cleaned every week, twice a week, every other week, or once a month. Typically, you can also choose the length of time cleaners spend in your home. Two hours might get the job done in an apartment, but a larger home might need six.

Those that use automation ensure their ongoing relationship with customers is managed automatically. Once a schedule is established, the system generates future appointments, processes recurring payments, sends reminders, and manages schedule changes or cancellations.

The distinction is not that individual cleanings use less automation but that the two cleaning service types automate different parts of the operation.

Two Cleaning Services with Membership Options

Some cleaning businesses also offer membership plans that offer attractive discounts. However, it’s essential to check out what each one offers, because these plans are often fundamentally different from each other.

As an example, Homeaglow offers a membership model that is designed for long-term saving. Handy doesn’t require subscriptions but offers optional membership that provides moderate discounts.

Homeaglow and Its ForeverClean Membership

Homeaglow and Its ForeverClean Membership

Homeaglow is an established, lower-cost online marketplace that connects customers in major U.S. cities with top-rated, trusted cleaners. Their focus is on affordable, routine household cleaning and upkeep, although they do also offer deep cleans and several add-ons including laundry and inside window cleaning.

All cleaners are certified and must pass a criminal background check. They provide all their own cleaning equipment and supplies.

Homeaglow’s ForeverClean Membership plan requires a minimum six-month commitment. It offers a choice of weekly, biweekly, or monthly recurring cleanings, emphasizing cleaner consistency and lower hourly rates.

The ForeverClean membership involves a recurring subscription fee of $19 for the first month and then $59/month thereafter. In addition, members pay hourly rates, but these are reduced to $18–$28 for each cleaning, amounting to as much as 50% to 60% off the standard hourly rate for non-members.

You don’t have to be a member to use Homeaglow’s services, but you won’t have the benefit of those discounts. Non-members pay $35–$55/hour whenever they want their homes cleaned.

There is a two-hour cleaning minimum for all of Homeaglow’s cleaning services, whether you’re a member or not. But the overall, fully automated process for members is flexible. While you’re locked into a recurring arrangement, you can schedule and reschedule your cleanings.

You can cancel or reschedule through your account dashboard, where you can change the date and time, switch cleaners, or cancel your booking. Changes can generally be made up to around six hours before cleaning is due to start without a penalty. If you cancel within six hours of the appointment, the fee is non-refundable.

Handy and Its Handy Savings and Select Memberships

Handy is an established mobile app and online platform that connects customers with independent professionals, including home cleaner and handyman services. Their focus is flexible, on-demand and occasional cleaning services with upfront pricing for every job. They state that adding extras, including deep cleaning, to standard cleanings usually adds an extra half hour of time and therefore cost per item.

Handy operates in the U.S., Canada, and the UK, and they ensure that all professionals are pre-screened.

The annual Handy Savings Membership fee is $29.99, and it gets you a 20% discount off any services you book through them during the year.

Handy Select Membership costs $10/month or $99/year and results in a 20% discount on all home cleanings. Their hourly rates and fixed fees (which they state are “deeply discounted”) are based on home size and/or task scope.

A recurring schedule is optional, but only members get that 20% discount. Non-members can book one-time cleaning services at the full rate without a subscription. Estimates state that a standard cleaning will cost anything from $50–$100+/hour, but you can reach out for price quotes specific to your home. There is a three-hour cleaning minimum for each job.

Overall, Handy offers complete flexibility, with no required minimum number of cleanings. However, you will still pay the membership fee if you miss a month’s cleaning. If you give at least 24 hours’ notice, you can cancel individual bookings without being charged.

Standard cleaning plans may require a minimum term commitment of three, six, or 12 months.

Benefits of a Recurring Cleaning Service vs. a Personal Routine

When a frequent traveler chooses a recurring cleaning service, there’s less to plan and organize. You don’t have to repeatedly book cleaning around your trips, and a regular schedule helps keep your home clean even when you’re traveling. Once established, cleaning becomes a regular part of your household routine rather than another task on your to-do list.

On the other hand, a personal routine gives you greater control over when cleaning takes place. You can book individual cleans around your travel plans rather than paying for appointments you don’t need. This flexibility can be particularly useful if your schedule is unpredictable or you spend extended periods away. However, you’ll need to keep track of when cleaning is required and arrange each appointment yourself.

Ultimately, a recurring service reduces the effort involved in managing cleaning, while booking individual cleans gives you greater control over timing and frequency.

Syncing a Cleaning Schedule Around Frequent Work Travel

Making Cleaning One Less Thing to Manage

Most frequent travelers already have enough dates, bookings, and arrangements to keep track of. And there is no doubt that travel can disrupt cleaning and other schedules.

Syncing a recurring cleaning schedule around frequent work travel—or even just around a busy business life in general—can be a lifesaver. Adding a professional cleaning plan to your calendar can effectively reduce the amount of input and management you have to do in your already limited free time.

When cleaning takes care of itself, you have one less thing to think about, no matter where your travels take you.
